Inktober is a daily inking challenge that encourages artists to respond to a set of prompts to inspire their artworks during October. Since the last attempt in 2019 where Photoshop was the focus, this year I wanted to challenge myself to use blender 3d to explore unique compositions and increase my capabilities in rapid concept development.

ADAPTING PROMPTS

Each day, Inktober presented a different prompt. To maintain a sustainable workflow a 2-hour time limit was set for each composition, with an additional review period of 20 minutes for adjustments in Photoshop. The following images were created using this approach.

In an attempt to prioritise composition and design over technical details, Quixel Bridge, as well as assets from older projects were used in a method known as kit-bashing. This placed exploration and composition at the forefront of the design process, with ample time, accounted for lighting, colour grading and scene detailing.

A MONTH IN REVIEW

FEEDBACK

As the month went on, each piece achieved an average completion time of 60 minutes, however, on reflection, the novelty of each composition began to drop as a smaller RnD time frame favoured specific stylistic directions. A white monolith with intricate gold inlays, therefore, became a reoccurring hallmark of my 2022 inktober collection.
