To advance my skills in photoshop, and study environment composition, I partook in the 2019 Inktober challenge. Detailed below is a series of concepts created - one for each day in October.
WHAT IS CONCEPT ART
In film design, concept art is used to convey a visual representation of a design, idea, or mood. The artform controls in many cases the direction of a film, video game or animation before it is rendered in 3D or further refined. By learning how to convey the overall design vision rather than specifying everything in exact terms; designers can achieve a cohesive vision by unifying ideas from other collaborators.
To understand my workflow and address areas to improve, the illustration of day 15's artwork was time-lapsed. At this stage, I noted that I got caught up in details early on in the scene building process and should spend more time with the composition instead.
Building up the layers used in the paintings required an understanding of colour theory and tonal manipulation. Photoshops layer blending options played a big role during the scene and lighting phases and helped build out different scenarios before settling in the desired direction. Both a study in visualisation and speed, crude brushes resembling oil painted strokes were used to quickly build out a scene while specialised foliage brushes were used to flesh out the details later. Lastly, colour gradients were added using the colour mask feature to selectively fill and render material based areas.
